First US Patients Travel to Monterrey

If you speak German, you're going to enjoy the one hour segment on stem cell therapies, featuring Barbara and Stephen Byer, on German Public Television being aired either Tuesday, June 9 or June 16. This episode of Frontal 21, created by Producer Stephan Mueller, focuses on current stem cell therapies being offered in Germany and elsewhere and their effect on the ALS population they've treated to date. Steve offers his views, personal in-depth investigations, and hopes for future developments. The show will be broadcast throughout much of Europe and will be dubbed in German. We hope to get an original copy, in English, to post on our web site but won't have the final word on that for about a month.

The children, parents, brothers, sisters and close friends of those with ALS often feel like the 'watchers'. We are the insider/outsiders who wrestle with the unrelenting ravages of a disease frequently beyond comprehension and control. The myriad of feelings send some of us into therapy, but the vast majority feel silenced. BEFORE AND AFTER is a new blog, created by Barbara Byer, for family members to read, comment, participate, submit, converse, share and vent either anonymously or with attribution. Privacy will always be respected. Hopefully, through this venue, deeper understanding and greater levels of compassion for each other will be reached.

The thoughtful contributions we've received in the last few months have inspired us to create Honorariums to accompany donations. Your words of praise, appreciation and love together with a photograph of the person honored will be posted onto the ALS WORLDWIDE web site for all to see and read. A TRIBUTE honors a friend or relative whose strength, courage and perseverance shines in the face of ALS as they treasure each day and maintain hope. A CELEBRATION honors an unsung hero who gives time and energy for the care of a person with ALS.  A REMEMBRANCE creates a memorial to someone who has lost the fight against ALS but lives on in a memory to be shared with others through your reminiscence.

Please visit ALS WORLDWIDE now and create your own, unique honorarium.  For those who have made a donation in the past and would now like to create an honorarium, please email a photograph and your acknowledgement to barbyer@alsworldwide.org

On November 10, 2009, Stephen Byer and Dr. Michael Schafer will present "Living with ALS" a Category 1 CME seminar for physicians at Southern Illinois University Department of Neurology. The presentation will be about fostering hope and life for those diagnosed with ALS. Creating holistic, hopeful, supportive care along with pharmacological and surgical treatment opportunities will be the focus of their one hour program. A seven minute introductory screening of 'Indestructible' will be included. One of the several goals of ALS WORLDWIDE  is to assist neurologists in reframing the conventional  "no hope, no cure, 2-4 years to live" message that has, until now, been delivered almost unilaterally to every ALS patient towards a more compassionate, hopeful, helpful and realistic offering.

The first two United States citizens arrive at Hospital San Jose Tec de Monterrey this upcoming weekend for stem cell treatments scheduled on June 9 and 11. Barbara and Steve will be there to assist in the coordination and communication between the families and hospital administration. Look for the full report on ALS WORLDWIDE in two weeks.

Thank you for your support of our efforts,
Barb and Steve
